Biblioteca nationala

The National Library of Romania

The National Library of Romania is one of the most beautiful examples of Romanian architecture where all the publications are stored.  The library collection is about 13.000.000, organized in a general category (romanian and foreign publications – books, newspapers and magazines) and a special category (bibliography, manuscripts, historical archives, old romanian periodicals, stamps, photographs, cartography, audio-visuals).

The roots of the library can be traced back to Saint Sava College library. Saint Sava College library was opened in 1859 when 1000 French volumes were archived. After 1859 Union, the library reached the national statute (Bibliotecă Naţională şi Bibliotecă Centrală – National and Central library)

The National Library of Romania preserves and manages an important part of the written national cultural treasure and participates in the building of a modern, dynamic and well-informed society by integrating documentary and informational resources at a national level, facilitating the pursuit of knowledge.

The journey that a book goes through since it was purchased and reached by the reader is rather a complicated one. “Until it gets the quota and is distributed in the reading room, a book goes from the publisher to the Procurement Office, where a preliminary description is made, then it arrives at the cataloging, where it is determined the domain to which it belongs, then a description sheet is found in the electronic catalog of the library and the book is distributed in the warehouse.”, explains Târziman Elena, the manager of the library.

The current adress of The National Library of Romania is Bucureşti, Bd.Unirii nr. 22, sector 3.
